Modern Methods for Characterizing Materials and Catalysts
Master and PhD Course
Course description
For a targeted design of materials such as catalysts, functional materials and sensors, a good knowledge of the correlation between structure and function are required. The characterization methods which are available are discussed in this advanced course. The main methods comprise TPR, TPD, chemisorption, thermal gravimetry, IR-, Raman-, TEM, XPS and X-ray diffraction. The methods are presented together with practical examples. Finally, synchrotron methods like X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), X-ray emission (XES) and synchrotron X-ray scattering methods are of strong relevance. In all the functional materials discussed in the course the investigation under reaction conditions is of strong importance to understand their structure in its „working“ state.
